Fish PrintingThe 1st Annual Choctawhatchee Estuary Festival was held at Rocky Bayou State Park in Niceville on Sunday, June 1, 2008.  The Festival was a huge success! More than 700 people of all ages attended the event.  The event included more than 30 displays and activities, including educational displays and hands on activities.  Groups hosting displays included the University of West Florida, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Jackson Guard, the Florida Kayaking Association, the Northwest Florida Water Management District, and many more.  Among the most successful activities were two co-hosted by the Mattie Kelly Environmental Institute and the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance, the crab races and T-shirt fish printing.  As part of the Festival, the Mattie Kelly Environmental Institute and CBA held an amateur Event Photophoto contest.  Eighty-three photos were entered in the contest.  Of these, 12 photos were selected (including 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners, and 9 honorable mentions) to be included in an upcoming 2009 calendar of the Choctawhatchee Watershed.

Some quotes from participants of the Festival:

“Your event yesterday is just the kind of learning experience that will motivate children and adults not to become a sponge but, to take responsible action to help our planet .We only hope to be around ten years from now to see how you progress and how this event develops.”

“Thanks for the opportunity to educate to so many interested people!”
